| Rossio Train Station |
Sintra
is 25 kilometres to the northwest of Lisbon, reachable from the coach
station, located between Restoradores Square and Don Pedro IV Square.
It is not that well indicated, but the building is impressive: It is
impossible to miss it. Intercity trains leave from this station. The
trip lasts 40 minutes.
| Return path from the Palace |
When
you arrive in Sintra, you have the possibility to go on foot or to
take the bus right away. The bus stops are to be found on the right
when you leave the train station. For €5 per person, the bus takes
you within 20 minutes to the Palace of Pena that is less than 6
kilometres away from downtown.
It
will take about an hour if you want to go there on foot. The walk is
not very pleasant. You will walk along the narrow and winding road on
which many tourist buses and cars pass by. However you would have the
time to admire the landscape and the different monuments on the way.
On the bus, it goes too fast.
The
Palace of Pena
Opening
Hours: From April to October 15, 9:45 am to 7:00 pm. From October 16
to March, 10:00 am to
6:00 pm.

This
palace with an astonishing and eclectic architecture was built in
1844 at the top of Sintra hill at the heart of park of 200 hectares.
The
visit will take you to a strange universe because of its romantic
style and its bright colours, yellow and red.
Outside
the palace, there are plenty of places (square, balconies, allure…)
from whence you can admire the view over the park but also on the
Tagus River. Inside, there are different rooms in which scenes were
reconstructed.
Impossible
to go to Sintra without visiting this surprising palace.
