Transport system in Porto

There is a refillable card called “Andante” enabling you to take the different ways of transportation of the city
(underground train, bus and train). Be careful! There are different zones. You need to choose the right zone when you purchase your travel ticket. For example, to reach the city centre from the airport, choose zone 4: €1.80/fare.
The Andante card itself costs €0.50. Then you add up the price of the fare according to the different zones: €1.15 (Z2), €1.45 (Z3)... The price for the different zones:

The Underground

There are 6 different lines. The underground system is open from 6:00 am to 1:00 am.

Porto’s underground network is quite extended and enables you to reach:
  • The airport (17 kilometres away from the city centre) Line E in 27 minutes
  • Póvoa de Varzim (38 kilometres in the north of the city) Line B in 1 hour and 10 minutes.
  • Many underground stations are above ground. It thus looks like more a tramway than an actual underground train system. But it makes you appreciate the urban environment. We can’t really complain about it.
You can purchase your tickets at the counter, but the most practical solution is still to use the self-service kiosks that are found at almost every station.

Tramways
There are only 3 lines serving a part of the city centre and mainly the northern banks of the Douro River. Full fares: €2.50.

Buses
Doubtlessly the most practical way of transportation downtown Porto, on condition that you understand bus network.
